The GSMA has recently announced the joining of China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom to the Open Gateway initiative. This global network of operators utilizes Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs) to offer universal access to operator networks. The primary goal of this initiative is to enable developers and cloud providers to enhance and deliver services more efficiently across various operator networks through single access points.
Early test programs focused on online financial crime and creating more immersive gaming experiences. Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA, emphasized the potential of this initiative, stating, “This will help unlock further value from 5G connectivity which will flow into the global economy and strengthen future investments, bringing transformational benefits of connectivity to all.”
Li Jun, EVP of China Telecom, also expressed the benefits of collaboration and shared frameworks between mobile operators, developers, and cloud providers. He believes that this will lead to new opportunities and the advancement of new industries and experiences.
Echoing Li Jun’s sentiments, Gao Tongqing, EVP of China Mobile, stated that they are “committed to opening up network capabilities and driving positive contributions to promoting the development of the digital economy.”
Launched earlier this year, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) now has 29 signatories. These include America Movil, AT&T, Axiata, Bharti Airtel, BT Group, China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Du, e& Group, KDDI, KPN, KT, Liberty Global, MTN, Omantel, Orange, Singtel, Swisscom, STC, Telecom Argentina, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, TIM, Veon, Verizon, and Vodafone.
With these major telecommunication companies joining the Open Gateway initiative, it is evident that industry leaders are keen on adopting the latest technologies and understanding their potential by working together. This collaboration will pave the way for enhanced services and new innovations, ultimately benefiting both the industry and end-users alike.
