Iberdrola, a renewable energy firm, will supply Vodafone operations in Germany, Portugal, and Spain with 410 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar energy annually, specifically photovoltaic (PV) energy. This expands an existing agreement, adding Portugal and Spain to their collaboration. Thus, the two companies are investigating further renewable initiatives across Europe.

The deal specifies that Vodafone Portugal will receive energy from the Velilla solar PV plant in Palencia, Spain. On the other hand, Vodafone Spain will receive 280 GWh annually from the new Cedillo PV plant in Cáceres, Spain. Vodafone Germany has agreed to consume all the energy produced by Iberdrola’s first solar project in Germany, the Boldekow PV plant.

Promisingly, the Boldekow PV plant, located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, will be fully functional by 2024. Its total capacity stands at 56 MWp. Interestingly, the energy generated by the three solar plants amounts to the annual electricity needs of around 117,000 households.

Being considerate of the future, Iberdrola also installed over 140 electric vehicle charging points at Vodafone Spain’s main facilities. Joakim Reiter, the Chief External & Corporate Affairs Officer at Vodafone Group, stated, “These agreements across Europe underline Vodafone’s commitment to ensure our customers will continue to benefit from electricity purchased 100% from renewable sources.” He also emphasized Vodafone’s enhanced energy security, long-term price certainty, and a firm goal of achieving net zero in their operations by 2030.

Aitor Moso, Iberdrola’s Global Clients Director, highlighted the collaborative efforts by both companies to support a cleaner and smarter future. He also noted how such agreements are pivotal for advancing new renewable projects.

Earlier this year, Vodafone in the UK announced various technical advancements aimed at bolstering its network’s energy efficiency. One such initiative is the installation of their first onsite solar panels at a network site in Gloucester. Furthermore, they plan to install rooftop solar PVs at more sites across the UK within the next two years.

While most major telcos have made their green pledges, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality on their own timelines, Vodafone notably shows remarkable initiatives this year. This is especially encouraging in what has been a year filled with tumult.
