Swisscom and Nokia have successfully brought Swisscom’s nationwide Next Evolution Wavelength Transport Optical Network (NEWTON) to life, and officially commenced the service migration to this state-of-the-art network. With high traffic growth and digital transformation in mind, Nokia’s optical networking solution will grant Swisscom, the largest telecom provider in Switzerland, a service-centric network. This unique network is optimized for high performance, cost efficiency, and superior customer experience.

The sudden rise in remote work and learning applications, video streaming, gaming, and cloud computing placed the spotlight on Swisscom’s 2021 ambition to provide robust support for business-critical fixed and wireless traffic. Swisscom chose Nokia’s range of optical networking hardware, software, and professional services for this complete transformation. This upgrade included the rollout of 22 backbone sites and 560 metro sites.

With the rollout completed before the deadline, both companies will now move to oversee the migration of services to the updated network. This new optical network will be responsible for transporting all of Swisscom’s fixed and wireless traffic, from customer-supplied equipment to metro access to the backbone. Catering to client services ranging from 1G to 400G, the network will efficiently handle traffic end-to-end while maximizing fiber usage. This solution will handle massive traffic growth by eliminating repetitive tasks, expediting service delivery, and reducing overall ownership costs. The substantially lower power consumption is also a noteworthy innovation, contributing to Swisscom’s sustainability goals by minimizing its carbon footprint.
